Arte-Polis International Conference 2024
Reinventing Creative Space and the Making of Place
About the Conference
Welcome to the Arte-Polis International Conference, which the Architecture Program at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in Indonesia is hosting. The 10th anniversary of the biennial conference on creative space and placemaking will be celebrated in 2024, with an emphasis on the dynamic interaction between innovative ideas, sustainable design, and city transformation.
The ideas of creative space and the making of place, or placemaking, have been at the forefront of our subjects since the first Arte-Polis conference in 2006. Yet during the past 20 years, the discourse and practice of placemaking have evolved. Placemaking has been a prominent concept in recent times, and it is now incorporated into almost every project as a fundamental element. The concept of placemaking has expanded up to this point, covering both transdisciplinary subjects and the wide range of urban design.
History
Arte-Polis was established in 2006. That year, the creative class concept was introduced, which posits that innovation and creativity are indispensable catalysts for both urban development and economic expansion. Our aim was to present a series of phenomena concerning the emergence of a creative class, comprising individuals engaged in design, art, and architecture, including academics, stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and designers.
Bandung: An Epicenter for Entrepreneurship and Creativity
Substantial to Bandung's dynamic environment is its thriving creative economy, which is preoccupied with architecture; interior design; visual communication; product design; film, animation, and video; photography; games; crafts; culinary arts; music; fashion; application; publishing; advertising; television and radio; performing arts; and fine arts. Seminars, conferences, and festivals that are led by young people demonstrate Bandung's dedication to fostering innovation, prototype development, and product innovation. The biennial conference was conducted in Bandung and explored distinct themes at each conference. These included creative communities and the making of place, creative collaboration and the making of place, connectivity and the making of place, public engagement and the making of place, creative tourism and the making of place, meaning in creativity and place-making in the era of digital automation, creative society and the making of place, and informality and alternative spaces.
Mission and Vision
Arte-Polis has functioned as a platform for productive dialogues among a heterogeneous community of practitioners, philosophers, and visionaries, serving as a melting pot of concepts, experiences, and innovations over the course of our history. Collectively, we have pushed the boundaries of ingenuity, novelty, and placemaking, contributing to the formation of a future wherein urban areas and physical surroundings are not solely utilitarian, but also alive, comprehensive, and profoundly significant.
We are filled with enthusiasm to proceed with this endeavor, establish fresh relationships, and create a lasting influence in the dynamic realm of creative urbanism and the making of place.
